The Brookings, South Dakota gun case history goes back to 1896. At that time, the town of Brookings was located in what is now called Sioux County. The small town was founded by Dutch farmers and their Indian allies during the Dakota War of 1894-95. The violence that ensued led to many casualties among both sides and created a need for firearms to protect innocent civilians from potential harm. As a result, the Dutch settlers began importing European-made revolvers into the area, and soon there were several businesses selling pistols and other firearms in Brookings. One such business was John Bunch & Sons Gun Emporium, which operated out of an old grocery store on Second Street. In 1916, John Bunch passed away and his son, Ben Bunch continued the family business until his death in 1958. From 1918 through 1934, Nellie Caldwell ran John Bunch's store as its manager. During this time period, she also became involved with local politics and served as an inspector for the city police department before becoming a state senator in 1938. In 1934, Frank Henson bought John Bunch's store and renamed it The Gunslinger Trading Post. He continued to operate it until his death in 1978; at that point it became known as The Frontier Trading Post Incorporated (FTPI). In 1984, FTPI merged with another Sioux City company named Century Arms Corporation to form Brooks Gun Emporium Incorporated (BGEE). BGEE continued operation out of our current location until 2009 when we sold our assets to Academy Sports & Outdoors Incorporated (ASO) for $165 million dollars. At ASO we found several customers who had long been interested in buying guns but had never had the opportunity to do so because of government regulations preventing individuals from owning handguns outside of states like California or New York City! We decided that we would enter into a licensee agreement with each state allowing us to sell handguns within those boundaries without having any problem being met with regulatory disapproval! This allowed us not only To commercially market our products within these states but also gave us an opportunity to learn more about how these laws functioned so that we could make changes if necessary! We have since successfully completed licenses for both California and New York City; this has given us increased access into those markets while still meeting all applicable regulations! As you can see throughout this history there have been many challenges faced by BGEE; however, through patience and perseverance we have always managed to overcome them! The jail was built on property donated by Abram Ainsworth and his family. At its opening, the jail held 30 inmates and employed six deputies. The sheriff's office continued to operate the jail until 1975 when it was closed down due to budget cuts.

When Kansas became a state in 1912, parts of Douglas County were given to Kansas as part of the deal that set off the Oklahoma Revolution. The community grew rapidly during World War II due to its strategic location near Sioux Falls and Rapid City for manufacturing and military purposes. In 1951, Brookings inducted into its community hall an American soldier known as "the country boy" because he had fought in both World Wars and Korea before becoming a civilian official with the U.S. Army Radio Service at Fort Riley in Topeka, Kansas.
