Brookings, South Dakota is a town in and the county seat of Brighton County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,842 at the 2010 census. Brookings is named after Rear Admiral George C. Brooke who served as the Commander in Chief of Allied Forces in Europe during World War II. The town was platted on March 3, 1881, by J.H. French and Wm.F. Greenough. It became a city on December 14, 1907, when it annexed the neighboring town of Spearfish.[1] The Brooks Range lies to the east of Brookings and forms a natural border between Brookings and Spearfish counties.[2] The range is known for its extensive coalmining operations which continue to this day,[3] as well as agriculture including cattle ranching and hay production.

The community has a rich history that can be found throughout its residents and businesses. The first settlers to Brookings were farmers who moved from Ohio to South Dakota in 1876. They were inspired by President Ulysses S. Grant’s vision for South Dakota and decided to come to the state because it had many good opportunities for agriculture. The first store in Brookings was built in 1879 by J.W. Heckerhoff and his wife Eliza Wiegand Heckerhoff. The Heckerhoff Store was one of the earliest stores in Brookings and served as a hub for local trade until 1934 when it closed down due to financial difficulties. In 1910, graziers set up their own ranching operation around what is now known as Roosevelt Road near present-day Brookings DamLeanage Park Golf Course; this led to growth within the area around Roosevelt Road which would eventually become part of downtown Brookings In 1933, pioneer Lillian Drake bought land east of downtown from her husband Washburn Drake; this changed Brookings forever as Lillian became an important figure within the community She began building schools and churches within town limits while also working tirelessly towards giving back to Brookings through donations, grants, & individual philanthropy In 1948 Brooks Drive was established as an offshoot of Lodge Street which linked all aspects of downtown with each other This resulted in more retail space available within town limits which allowed businesses greater flexibility & latitude when choosing where they wanted their store or office space In recent years there have been several expansions/modifications along Lodge Street including: Harbour Landing (2007), Renaissance Commons (2009), & The Gables (2013). These developments have brought new life both inside& outside city limits while maintaining much of what makes Brookings unique––including its longstanding entrepreneurial spirit & strong social fabric
The Brookings area was first settled in 1879 by a group of Norwegian immigrants who named their new community after General James Sturgis, the United States Military Commander in South Dakota during the Indian Wars. The town rapidly grew and soon became a center for mining and ranching activity. In 1907, the city of Brookings began to grow rapidly thanks to an influx of American families moving into the region after wartime service in World War I. By 1930, Brookings had become one of South Dakota's largest cities with a population of over 100,000 people. However, following the stock market crash of 1929, many Americans left South Dakota for greener pastures and business opportunities elsewhere. The city declined until the early 1990s when it experienced a renewal period as its downtown district underwent renovation and expansion plans that increased its population from 25,000 to 75,000 people. Today, Brookings is an important cultural and economic center in South Dakota with strong ties to education, government services and industry.
