Brookings is a city in the U.S. state of South Dakota, located on the Missouri River at its confluence with the Sioux River. The population was 54,821 as of the 2010 census. Brookings is home to South Dakota State University and to two branches of the United States military: Fort Riley and Fort Benning. The first European settler in what is now Brookings was James McKay, who arrived in 1872. He founded an agricultural society called The Meadow Lake Settlement Company which traded with Native American groups for goods such as flour and meat. In 1876, McKay married Martha Aiken, daughter of Major General George Aiken of Helena, Montana Territory. They bought 8 miles (12 km) north of present-day Brookings from Sioux Nation leaders encircling the area for hunting rights, creating what would become known as The Aiken Settlement Park today. The town site was chosen because it lay on a wagon road linking central Kansas City with Omaha via Council Bluffs and Rock Island Railroad lines then operating through Iowa County into Nebraska Territory before terminating at Rapid City near present-day Pierre; this route crossed Iowa Creek between what are now downtown Brookings and First Avenue NE near Broadway Market Street NW today's location of Target store #1 & #2 across I-35E from current day business district boundaries established by Interstate 35W expansion planners some time after McKay's death in 1906 In 1901, Harry Emerson Fenton donated land comprising much of what is now downtown Brookings to create Fenton Field Army Airfield northwest of town limits - one component of then newly formed South Dakota War Department Headquarters Complex also located nearby along I-635 today's Goodyear tire dealership complex – helping establishSouth Dakotan aviation industry bona fide during World War II era drive for munitions production during post-World War II boom years .
