Brookings is a town in Douglas County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Douglas County. Brookings was founded in 1881 by David Barron and his wife Sarah Hutton. Brookings has been inhabited by humans since at least 8600 BC when people lived on the banks of the Missouri River. The first European to visit Brookings was French trader Étienne de Monts in 1762. The early residents were farmers who raised cotton and wheat. In 1881, David Barron moved to Brookings from Rapid City, SD and started a small ironworks business with his brother-in-law Edwin Pugh. By 1893, he had developed a large millinery operation that produced dresses for women and men across South Dakota and Iowa. When World War I began, Barron joined the army as an intelligence officer and served in France; he returned home to help found Brookings in 1918 as a militarytown with civilian control over housing, schools, businesses, etc.. During World War II, because of its strategic location within easy reach of Nazi Germany's Baltic naval base at Königsberg (now Kaliningrad), Brookings played an important role in Allied strategy during the war effort as well as providing munitions production facilities for local factories under local government control such as those at Watertown (now North Adams). Following World War II, most of what remains of the original community disappeared due to development; however some buildings survive today including Barron's Millinery factory which now operates as a museum housed inside an old flourmill built by Barron himself - one of only four surviving mills from this era in America! Today’s downtown area includes several blocks of nineteenth century brick buildings dating from various stages of demolition or renovation over time - all evidence that history never rests!
