Aberdeen was founded in 1875 by Norwegian immigrants who named it after their home city of Aberdeen, Scotland. It became a consolidated city in 1907 and has since been an agricultural center and tourist destination. The town is located on the Missouri River near its confluence with the Sioux River. Aberdeen's history can be traced back to 1875 when Norwegian immigrants arrived in what is now Marshall County and named the community Aberdeen after their home city of Aberdeen, Scotland. In 1907, Aberdeen merged with neighboring Rapid City to form a consolidated city under the leadership of Mayor George Wenzler.
