Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House after a three-week siege that began on April 9th and ended on April 12th. Withdrawing their forces from Richmond Heights near Petersburg, Virginia they left behind many munitions and stores which were looted by Union troops during their withdrawal; this event is known as the Battle of Appomattox Court House. After the war ended, West Columbia became an important center for trade and commerce with its growing population being drawn by opportunities available in the reconstructed Southeast United States. The city experienced another boom period during Reconstruction which saw it grow significantly with new housing developments being developed along Elm St., Huntingdon Ave., Holly Dr., Patton Blvd., and other streets throughout downtown area including today’s wall shopping district around 4th St./Prospect St.. During this time there were major efforts made to improve public transportation within town by building streetcars linking all of downtown with small stops scattered throughout each block - making it easy for locals to get around without having to take multiple trips into town Centre or outlying neighborhoods
West Columbia was founded in 1837 by James Wilkinson and his brother, John Wilkinson. The city became an important railroad center after the railroads were established in South Carolina. In 1865, West Columbia was merged with other settlements in the Beech Grove area to form a new city named for physician Dr. John Cranch.
