This led to a battle known as Pickett’s Charge which resulted in vast losses for both sides but ultimately helped rally other Confederate soldiers aroundLee and enable him to hold onto Richmond until after the Battle of Gettysburg! After the Civil War ended there was much growth in South Carolina due to agricultural production (particularly cotton) and increased demand for labor during Reconstruction period (1868-1912). The town of West Columbia was founded in 1864 by Drury Gillespie as a trading post on Indianola Creek between Johnston City and Sumterville.
