The secession occurred when then-Governor Arnold Johnson vetoed a bill that would have established statewide school funding formulas that favored white schools over black schools. West Columbia has had several mayors since its incorporation as an unincorporated community: Dolphus Hawkins (1871-75), Cushman Gammon (1907-10), WV Hargrave (1914-17), Harry Lee (1921-25), and John Leland Keyser (1927). Keyser was succeeded by his son John Leland Keyser II who served from 1961 to 1971 and then from 1977 to 2001. From 1975 to 1979, Mayor Harry Cooks served as acting mayor while City Councilmember Aiden Ayers represented the borough seat on the City Council which he held until he resigned effective January 1st, 2002 due to term limits set by then Mayor Jody Kuykendall Jr..Ayers was succeeded by Alvin Brown who served for two terms before being elected Mayor on November 3rd 2005 with 58% of the vote against incumbent Karen Ackerman’s 40%. Brown won re-election on November 3rd 2009 with 53% of the vote against Ackerman’s 47%. On January 2nd 2012 Mayor Brown announced his candidacy for Governor but withdrew after being placed third out of four candidates following a close primary campaign season
