In 1816, Congress authorized an act to establish "a post office for carrying on trade with all parts of America," which would eventually become known as West Columbia Post Office; this act also provided for Lot No 1 (now Moultrie Street) in Center Square to be donated to the City for that purpose In 1828, Captain John Gregg sold his interest in West Columbia Plantation to General Andrew Johnson During Reconstruction Era (1865-1877), many white Southerners moved into West Columbia while African Americans were still migrating from across Confederate lines into Union states during that time period White flight began after Reconstruction ended with passage of The Ku Klux Klan Act (1871) and Jim Crow laws

In 1978, it voted to become a full municipality with its own government and mayor. On November 6 that year, Mayor Clyde Cagle won re-election after being first term's mayor with nearly 60% of the vote against challenger John Posey's 38%. On December 1st 2009 voters approved plans for a new downtown development which would include approximately 400 apartment units and 100 shops/restaurants including such local businesses as Piggly Wiggly World Market and IHOP
The first permanent white settlement in what is now South Carolina was on the Santee River, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean near Charleston. White traders and settlers began arriving in the region in early 1770s, and by 1775, they had founded a small town called West Columbia. The town was originally named for Captain James Cook's exploratory voyage of HMS "Endeavour" in 1768-1769, but it was renamed for General John West during the American Revolution. The initial growth of West Columbia was slow due to lack of available land and a scarcity of water resources. However, as word spread about opportunities to produce saltpeter and other valuable minerals in this part of North America, business picked up quickly. In 1802, King George III granted land toWest Columbia residents in order to encourage them to settle here permanently. This Act created the Town of West Columbia and designated it as its municipal center. During World War II, West Columbia played an important role as one of several U.S. military bases located around South Carolina. This included RAF Upper Simpson (later RAF Mount Pleasant), which became operational during September 1942; Forts Mecklenburg and Person were built at nearby Bluffton; and many other airfields were developed or expanded during the war years including Love Field (now Fort Worth Scott Air Force Base) and Myrtle Beach Naval Air Station (now Joint Base Myrtle Beach-Fort Mill). Since its inception as a municipality, West Columbia has worked hard to maintain its position as an important community withinSouth Carolina culture and economy. The municipality has been responsible for developing such initiatives as building a library system; creating new parks; hosting events such as soccer games or dances; establishing school districts that serve all students within the municipality boundaries; providing policing services;and more.
