Gun targets have been a part of West Columbia, South Carolina history for many years. The first target was made in 1892 by Fenton & Company. It was called the "Fenton Rifle". Between 1907 and 1912, two companies made target rifles; Herrick Manufacturing Company and Harcourt Manufacturing Company. These target rifles were designed to shoot bulls-eyes out of a distance of 25 yards or less. In 1911, the city purchased three rifle racks from Wernham & Judd for use on City Hall lawns. In 1916, the city purchased four gun racks from George Ladd for use at City Hall. From 1916 to 1918, the targets were used as artillery practice ranges in preparation for World War I. After the war ended, the gun racks were stored until they were donated to the city in 1922 by George Ladd’s grandson, Charles Haddon Ladd Jr.. From 1922 until 1934, West Columbia's first shooting range was located on State Street between Easley and Coliseum Streets. This range consisted of three levels with a sidehill offshoot which could be used for 300 rounds per day (the equivalent of 12 magazines today). That same year, Wernham & Judd created their own rifle rack company and produced targets out of brass instead of wood. In 1935, NRA member Ernest Tubb began manufacturing his own targets out of aluminum that became known as Tubb Targets. Tubb Targets continued production until 1974 when they ceased all operations due to lead poisoning problems among employees
