West Columbia, South Carolina is a city located in the eastern part of the United States. It is the county seat of Richland County and has a population of over 150,000. The city was founded in 1836 by Capt. James A. Robertson as West Columbia on land that he acquired from the British government. The first white settlers were brought to the area by Capt. John Hinds in 1837 and began trading with Native Americans and settling near present-day Clemson University. In 1839, Robertson sold the city to General Andrew Johnson for $10,000 cash. Johnson renamed it West Columbia after himself and made it the capital of South Carolina during his presidency from 1865 to 1868. AfterJohnson's death, West Columbia reverted back to its original name before becoming an all-white town again in 1890 until African American residents moved into the area starting in 1965 when integration became official in South Carolina
