In the early 1800s, South Carolina was a slave-holding state and handguns were not allowed. However, by 1820, ownership of pistols had spread to free blacks in the state. The first handgun laws were passed in 1825 and 1827, outlawing any pistol that could be used for hunting or militARY purposes. In 1840, West Columbia became the 1st town in SC to prohibit handguns from being owned by residents. Firearms made their way into our society through trade and smuggling routes during this time period. Many of these guns were obtained illegally or smuggled into the country with no safety features or registration requirements. Ammunition for firearms was also often procured through contraband methods such as buying rounds of ammunition at military bases or other government installations around the country while on duty. Gunsmiths who specialized in working on handguns began appearing during this time period and soon enough, pistols became one of the most popular arms in America. Throughout the 19th century and 20th century, handguns underwent many changes including new designs and calibers; however, until recently only a very small number of them have been preserved for public viewing and research purposes (eFigures 1-4).

Shotguns Shotshells fired from a shotgun consist of small pellets that are shot into the air by way of the muzzle blast. Shotguns were originally designed for hunting big game such as deer or turkey. They can be used for self-defense as well as target shooting. Shotguns have many different types and sizes depending on their use. The most common type is the 9mm Glock handgun which has been in use for over 30 years now in both law enforcement and military applications around the world. Handguns Handguns are firearms that hold more rounds than shotguns but smaller cartridges than revolvers or pistols. handguns were developed as personal defense weapons in countries like America where knives were not allowed to be carried outside and carrying any sort of firearm was considered an invitation to get mugged or worse. handguns include all sorts of different shapes and sizes including those made specifically for target shooting (Taurus) or self-defense (Sig Sauer) uses while also incorporating features like Beretta’s slide action design which makes them easier to handle when drawing attention away from yourself while you reload your weapon
The first firearms in West Columbia, South Carolina were handguns. In 1821, a man by the name of David Hogg sold a gun to John C. Overton. Overton was from Kentucky and had come to America to find his fortune. He started a grocery store in West Columbia and soon began selling guns to local residents. The first revolver in West Columbia was made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1825.

This patent was later bought by James Browning, who improved upon it and developed the first successful firearm of this type in 1851.
In 1821, when the United States acquired West Columbia from Denmark for $10,000 in cash, it was a small town of about 150 people. The town had no mills or factories and relied largely on fishing and farming. By 1860, however, West Columbia had become an important railroad center with a population of 5,000. The growth of the city led to increased development in the surrounding countryside and helped make West Columbia one of the most prosperous cities in South Carolina. In 1911, West Columbia became the capital of South Carolina after Charleston was moved to that location from Savannah. The city's infrastructure improved rapidly during this time as new roads were built and industrial plants were established. In 1970, however, a series of devastating fires destroyed many buildings in downtownWest Columbia. Since then, much progress has been made to revitalize the cityscape and make it more environmentally friendly.
The area now known as West Columbia was first settled in the early 1800s by white Americans. The town was founded on the banks of the Waccamaw River, and it grew quickly because of its location and natural resources. In 1819, West Columbia became a separate district within the County of Charleston. In 1828, the town charter was amended to allow for a more democratic government, which led to growth in political activism. By 1840, West Columbia had a population of about 2,000 people. In 1865, Confederate General Peebles moved his artillery batteries from Fort Sumter to nearby Battery Wagner to support Confederate forces against Union troops under General Sherman. Aftermath of the Civil War made West Columbia an important crossroads for reconstruction efforts in South Carolina. Over time,West Columbia slowly regained its lost economic stability and infrastructure. In 1984, West Columbia became part of Greenville County when South Carolina merged with neighboring North Carolina.
