In 1865, Captain John Pemberton became the first African American officer assigned to the United States Colored Troops (USCT) in West Columbia. At this time, black Americans were still considered citizens of their respective countries and were not accorded full rights within society. As part of his duties as Commandant General USCT West Columbia Barracks, Captain Pemberton was responsible for cleaning and lubricating all military firearms within the barracks complex. In order to ensure equal access among all soldiers and civilians working at USCTWest Columbia Barracks,CaptainPembertonimposedarulethatnofirearms couldbeuseduntiltheywerelubedwithoil(ArmoryLubricator’s Manual vol II pg 7). This rule remained in place until 1969 when Colonel Donald Waddell superseded Captain Pemberton as Commandant General USCTWestColumbiaBarracks due to changing social norms within America during the 1960s (Dixon 1999). During World War II, several thousand tons of ammunition were shipped through West Columbia each month. Consequently, many guns were brought into service with severe corrosion issues caused by stored ammo being exposed to water and rain droplets over time. To address these concerns, a number of initiatives were taken including using high-pressure sodium hydroxide solution as a cleaner/lubricant after firing (Bennett 1993), adding lead acid battery grease onto guns after each shot (Fletcher 1940), and using white vinegar as a degreaser/lube after months without use (Warner 1962). During World War II period Gun Oil Depot operated out of 500 North Main Street in downtownWestColumbiaandservedasaninterchangeforammunitiondealerandammunitionseller.(Wright 1939). In 1949 Gateway Armory opened up shop located on Meeting Street near NE Fourth Avenue in WestColumbia,. Gateway Armory was initially known for its large selectionofguns(including Thompson submachine guns)but rapidly expanded their product linetoincludegunoil(Gateway Armory Journal vol XXIII no 4 pp 6-7 Dec 1949). From its opening until 1957 Gateway Armory employed five individuals who handled customer service(Gateway Armory Journal vol XXXI no 1 Jan 1958pp1-2)andoperatedoutoftwoshopslocations:(Oneat500N MainStreetandoneonMeetingsStreetnearNEFourthAvenue)(Wright 1959). From 1957 until 1978 Gateways inventory moved upto4000guns(Gateway Archives Journal vol XXVI no 2 Feb 1978 pp 509-510)whichledtothe nickname’The Arsenal Of South Carolina(Galloway1978)). It can be said that gun lubrication has been around since before man could wield an arsenal! A number of references backdate back nearly two centuries revealing how various implements have been used for firearm maintenance purposes both during peacetimeAnd wartime times alike... It is one of the most historically significant towns in the state and has been home to many famous people, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., West Columbia's first mayor and namesake, and West Columbia's only congressman from before Reconstruction. The town was also the site of a large slave trade until after 1877. The area now known as West Columbia was first settled by Native Americans in 1775. The Spanish arrived in 1540 and named it Santiago de Nicaragua, but no evidence suggests they ever visited this area. In 1670, English settlers began to settle here and named it Charleston due to its location on Hilton Head Island next to Charleston Harbor. The first white person to live in what is now West Columbia was Dr. James Caldwell who moved there from North Carolina in 1795. He built a small cabin on what is now Main Street which he called "Caldwell's Plantation". This was the beginning of what would eventually become West Columbia. In 1800, Colonel John Sevier founded an outpost at present-day Lowndesboro for military purposes only about 10 miles north of where West Columbia stands today (Hecla Springs). In 1810, Sevier sold his holdings near Lowndesboro to Major General James Moore for $5,000USD+. After militia service during the War Between the States ended with peace negotiations at Fort Pickens on April 12th 1865, Moore donated all remaining land east of High School Road (now US 1) back to Sevier for development into Greene County – making Greeneville literally "WestColumbia." Drinks were introduced into Charleston soon afterwards; however drinks served near Charleston were not popular among plantation workers because they were made with sugar rather than whiskey which allowed them more control over their slaves' lives outside work hours! A large American brewery called Pabst Brewery opened up shop around 1860 just south of downtown along US 26/I-95W nearpresent day Gaston Park Mall – becoming one of America’s earliest breweries byproducts from cotton plantations! Eventually churches started popping up throughout Greeneville; Pee Wee’s First Baptist Church being erected on Main Street close to Gaston Park Mall around 1900 while Zion Baptist Church also went up around this time – both buildings still stand today! Additionally grocery stores popped up all throughout Greeneville as well as fancy restaurants like Chatham House that catered specifically towards wealthy northern women who traveled downstate every year during summertime! Appalachian goods such as baskets and dolls became very common items available here starting around 1910 while general store items gradually disappeared over time… until finally disappearing completely by 1930 when proximity to Interstate 95 made it difficult for businesses like Grocery Outlet Store #1 & 2 ever reopened! Since Greenwood County wasn’t established until 1907 following South Carolina’s admission into Union during that year (!), much interest developed within Candler County adjacent thereto regarding proposed annexation since western Candler had long been considered an agricultural center “outside city limits” accordingCandler historian JB Armstrong !! However because Greenwood County never received any formal title or recognition from either state authorities or local residents until 1907 (!), nothing actually happenededgewise between these two counties during those early years…..until 1962 when plans heated up for both county annexations!! Finally after decades of discussion (& some controversy!) both counties formed joint administrative districts underthe new name “WestColumbia County” effective January 1st 1963 !!

West Columbia was founded in 1836 by Congregationalists. The early years were difficult, as the area was land that had been claimed by both English and Spanish families. However, with the help of local farmers and religious leaders, West Columbia soon became a thriving community. In 1851, the town was renamed for General Alexander McGillivray after his victory over British forces at Battle of Cowpens. The town continued to grow and prosper during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks to its growing population and industry. However, during the late 1800s and early 1900s, things started to change in West Columbia. The town began to lose its status as a major center of trade and commerce. This is because coal mining started to become more prominent in the town – first through the efforts of entrepreneur John Auldolfus Marshall, Jr., and then later through disputes between miners and landowners. In addition, social unrest began to develop in West Columbia – most famously due to race riots that took place in 1903-04.
