West Columbia, South Carolina is a town located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 11,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Spartanburg County metropolitan statistical area. West Columbia is home to Clemson University and the United States Military Academy West Point. The town originated on the banks of the Ashley River in 1824 as a small settlement by Methodists named for David Ashley, who had come from England to survey a route for a new routing ofthe Savannah and Charleston Railroad. The first permanent settler in what would become West Columbia was John White in 1829, when he bought land from Samuel Ashe for $280. White built his house onpresent-day Fourth Street near US 1A about two miles west of where it now stands and named it "White's Station". He also developed land east of US 1A along present-day Fifth Avenue between High Street and Whyte Road into what became known as "Ashley Heights", later called "Scott's Hill". In 1832, Wm Sutton purchased some acres north of White's Station from him and began developing it into what would become known as "South Side" or Second Townsite (later Third Townsite). At that time, there were only three buildings in First Townsite: Old Fort Smith Jail (now part of Clemson University), Ashley House (also now part of Clemson University) and Hale's Tavern (now part of Brown University). In 1836, James Moulton purchases some more land adjoining Scott's Hill from original ThirdTownsite owner Wm Sutton for $2 per acre. This enlarged SecondTownsite contained twenty-six buildings - including six brick homes - plus an blockhouse designed by noted builder Daniel Burnham which served as both courthouse and jail until 1840 when its use was changed to serve as a Post Office instead Moultons sold most of this property subsequent to his death in 1849 to trustees under directions given byhis son James Moultons II who then donated all but one blockhouse with associated road rights thereto to Clemson College in 1865 In 1830 John Hargrave movedfrom Winchester, VAAccumulated over 4 years worth crops & raised 3 hogs muck @ £8/head bale Hog Feed Mill erected Oct 1830—leased Dec 1840 lot 15 Sqft lot size 100 yds x 50 yds lots cost £4/acre
West Columbia, South Carolina was founded on April 17, 1814 by Capt. James A. Moore and his men as the Continental Settlement of Columbia County. The town originated from a group of settlers who left North Carolina to establish a new home in what is now West Columbia County. The first permanent settler in the area was John Wilkinson, who arrived in 1814. By 1830, there were over 200 people living in the town. In 1832, the state of South Carolina authorized a census of all citizens within its boundaries and West Columbia received a population of 350 residents. The town experienced growth during the American Civil War effort because much of it was occupied by Union forces. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert Ewell's surrender at Appomattox Court House, most ofColumbia County became part of newly formed Stonewall Jackson Parish in nearby Charleston County. In 1902, West Columbia voters passed an ordinance establishing retail stores within the city limits and this led to increased business activity throughout thetown center and other areas around it. From 1922 until 1978, West Columbia was served by its own radio station which operated out of City Hall until that facility burned down in 1978. Today,West Columbia remains an agricultural community with many businesses focused on agriculture including feeder crops and hay production as well as local processing services such as those used for pet food and fertilizer
