Colonel John Pollard built his plantation here around 1810 and named it Pollard's Landing after himself and others associated with that early period of settler development hereabouts including Major General James Wofford Pollard (1763-1837), commander of SC militia during the American Revolution; Nathaniel Winslow Plantation; Lewis Pemberton Mallet; Joshua Watkins; Amos Kendall: these were some among many early settlers who bled westward from Savannah through new settlements founded by British North America across Georgia into what became modern SC when that territory was organized as Kershaw County on February 15th 1816 under Aiken Governor James Moore

In 1814, the United States government renamed the town to honor General James Wilkinson who had fought against Native Americans in Battle of Hanging Rock. The name "West Columbia" stuck and has been used ever since to identify this particular community within South Carolina. Over time, West Columbia became a booming center for commerce and industry. Many businesses were established in what is now the downtown area including banks, factories, lumberyards, and more. Additionally, many churches were built in this period which remain some of South Carolina's most iconic landmarks today. In 1924, West Columbia became one of sixteen cities located in southcentral South Carolina under then-Governor Averill Harriman's regional development program called "Cities for Southern Negroes." This program aimed to improve economic opportunities for African Americans by creating new industrial areas and housing developments throughout southcentral South Carolina. The city would continue to grow during this time with many new businesses being established as well as much progress made towards racial equality.
West Columbia, South Carolina is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what is now West Columbia were white men from Georgia and North Carolina who founded a small community called "Mountain View" on the edge of a salt lick some miles east of Spartanburg. In 1827, they named their new settlement for General John C. Breckinridge, an American war hero who had served under General Andrew Jackson and then became president pro tempore of the Confederate States of America before achieving his ultimate goal - secession from the Union. Breckinridge's home still stands today as part of West Columbia's downtown core - it has been preserved as a museum within walking distance of most businesses and government buildings in town. Breckinridge himself died in 1875 but his memory lives on through many local landmarks and products such as cheese made from his milk Rancho del Rio near present-day Mount Pleasant
