In 1886, an act of Congress designated West Columbia as the capital of Spartanburg County; but this designation was never ratified by the county's voters due to opposition from some residents who felt that neighboring Greenville should be designated as the capital because of its larger population and more influential political institutions. A new capitol building (now known as Clemson University's Wofford Hall) was built on Washington Street in 1912–13 after years of construction which included contributions from local businesses and citizens alike. In 1933, West Columbia became one of four counties (along with Jasper County, Alabama; Coweta County, Georgia; and Union County, New York) within South Carolina newly formed out of parts of Greene County following enactment of legislation creating new county boundaries subsequent to Appomattox Court Courthouse Case fame. West Columbia experienced significant growth during World War II due to military activity including housing for personnel stationed at nearby Clemson University as well as manufacturing activities around nearby production plants run by various companies such as Boeing and Raytheon. Afterward however growth slowed significantly during peacetime until Samford University moved into downtown in 1998 generating much news media attention for what has become one of Spartanburg County's most popular tourist attractions primarily focused on campus events such as commencement ceremonies or student debates/discussions related to political correctness on college campuses across America although occasional retail storefronts also survive along Washington Street today beginning about 1895 when J & B Hales grocery store operated along this street corner before moving down southwesterly onto 14th Street / present day Broadway before ceasing operations about 1990 when communityowned bank First National Bank began operations at current location next door to IMAX movie theater formerly home to historic African American Baptist church located east side now occupied by Lowe’s department store - both properties are listed on US Register Of Historic Places
