Sumter is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Sumter is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by white settlers in 1847 and named for General James Sumter, an American Revolutionary War general who fought against British forces at the Battle of Yorktown. In 1870, the town became a county seat and remained that way until 1955 when it was moved to its current location. The first high school in Sumter opened in 1909 and served grades K through 12 until 1978 when it merged with nearby Spartanburg High School to form Spartanburg County High School. Today, Sumter's only secondary school is Lamar Consolidated Middle School which serves grades 9 through 12. In addition to its retail stores and restaurants, Sumter also offers several small business parks which are used by local farmers as well as numerous private schools located within walking distance of the main shopping district. One such park is Cherokee Park which features a variety of sports fields, playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, a pond/Lake section with fishinguggishs available year round as well as an equestrian center/park that provides indoor riding opportunities for children from pre-K thru 8th grade; Additionally Cherokee Park contains two churches - First Baptist Church (founded 1931) and Christmastime Chapel (founded 1949).

Sumter County was formed on December 15, 1818 from the portion of Spartanburg County that lay east of the Ashley River. The area now comprising Sumter County was part of South Carolina until 1785, when it became part of North Carolina. The first permanent white settlement in what is now Sumter County was on a small island in the Ashley River about three miles upstream from its present location. This early settlement was called "Granberry Island." A group of men, led by Captain William Pemberton and including Nathaniel Burch, set out from Granberry Island on February 6, 1792 to explore and map the new territory they had discovered. They named their new town after General Thomas Sumter who had been captured at Camden Heights during the American Revolution and then held as a prisoner in British America. The town of Granberry Island quickly grew into a thriving community, based on fishing, farming and trading with other parts of South Carolina and Georgia. By 1810 Granberry Island had become an important commercial center for the region because it possessed good navigation channels through which goods could be shipped to markets in Charleston and Savannah. Meanwhile, another early settler at Granberry Island – James Cammack – began building a log cabin which he named "Cumberland." In 1819 Cumberland became home to South Carolina's first public school - also known as "the First School House" - which taught children from ages 7 to 12 years old. In 1830 Cumberland also became home to one of the first Methodist churches inSouth Carolina; built by Revs John Denton and Ebenezer Morse. A series of hurricanes ( Hurricanes Andrew , Katrina , Rita ) destroyed much property along both banks of the Ashley River between 1835-1836 but did not damage or kill any people or animals in Sumter County however some crops were lost or damaged due to flooding caused by these storms . The county courthouse stood unharmed until 1906 when it was replaced with a more modern structure . In 1840 Reverend David Ransom founded what is today known as Baptist Church at Broad Street near where Interstate 95 currently meets SC Route 301 . Baptists soon proselytized throughout much of eastern South Carolina due to their belief that salvation came through faith alonerather than through works
