By 1930, when white flight began to cause demographic changes throughout much of south Carolina (and elsewhere), Sumter had become one of the most heavily African American towns in America—the result of social antipathy towards Yankees rather than any real economic opportunities or growth potential. This situation changed rapidly during Reconstruction; by 1865 African Americans constituted only about 10% of the population but were nearly 30% of business owners and 75%of school board members—a level they maintain to this day. During World War II, many residents served on local military units such as Coast Guard Station "Amber" and Company C (1939-1945)of 3d Infantry Regiment who fought at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima before being discharged home with Purple Hearts; locals are also particularly proud of their role as farmers which helped support industry during wartime while also providing food for troops living ashore while they were fighting abroad.—Obituary: Mrs Ethel Ligon October 8th 2020

Sumter has long been an agricultural center with citrus fruits being main crops until recent years; however there are now significant concentrations of manufacturing including textiles, plastics, furniture and other products exported from the county. Manufacturing jobs have grown rapidly since 2000 when manufacturing as a whole experienced a decline across South Carolina due to economic recession worldwide However this decline may be reversing as new companies enter the market with new technologies or processes that could create new opportunities for employment in these industries
In 1821, Sumter County was formed from the parts of Anson and Laurens counties. The county seat was at Greenville. In 1875, Sumter County became one of the five original counties in South Carolina.
