In recent years, however, there have been some revitalization efforts led by boosters including a new library and park system; development of a small agricultural sector; and increased tourism due to an increasing number of visitors from nearby coastal towns such as Myrtle Beach, Florence, or Wilmington.

In 1824, Sumter County was formed from parts of Orangeburg and York counties. In 1865, the Union army under General Ulysses S. Grant destroyed a Confederate battery at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. The event is often considered the beginning of the American Civil War. The county seat was located in Greenville until it was moved to Sumter in 1892. In 1907, Greenville became the first town in South Carolina to be chartered as an incorporated municipality with a mayor and city council. The towns of Summerhill and Greenville were merged into one town on July 1, 1959.
