Sumter is a town in Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson metropolitan area. The townsite of Sumter was first settled in 1824 by two families from Scotland who were traveling through the area on their way to join General Andrew Jackson's army during the War for Independence. The town name may have originated with nearby Mount Pleasant (later renamed Greenville). In 1827, George Washington Carver and his family arrived in Sumter after travelling from Georgia. They set up a grocery store and farmstead on what is now Main Street. A year later, they erected a small Presbyterian church and began to provide religious services to local farmers and workers. In 1830, Captain John Stevens built a sawmill on River Road near present-day Hawkins Boulevard. By 1835, there were six stores in Sumter with an average of $2 per week in sales. One of the most important early contributors to the growth of Sumter was Judge Augustus Halsey who donated land for a courthouse and became its first judge. He also established Sumters Female Academy which still operates today as one of South Carolina's leading schools for girls. During Reconstruction following the Civil War,Sumter became one of several Confederate strongholds along the lower Ashley River valley west of Spartanburg County Line including Rocky Mountsboro , Mocksville , Easley (later known as Florence) and Pee Dee Junction where pro-Union men convened to plan operations against Union forces besieging Richmond; these activities are considered Operation Crossroads . On October 12th 1865 General Robert Ewell delivered his orders ordering all Confederate forces east of Rometown Bridge across Ashley River into Union hands; this order led to organized resistance by Confederate troops at Battle Of Rometown where over 500 Private soldiers fought against General Ulysses S Grant's 3rd Kentucky Infantry Regiment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel David J.[Johnston] Aftermath resulted in over 50 killed/wounded/captured while some 875 men surrendered or were marched back into Union lines under heavy fire
