Sumter, South Carolina is a small town located in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. The population was 9,546 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sumter County and has a total area of 21 square miles. The climate in this area is mild to cool with significant rainfall during the summer months. The first European settlers in what is now Sumter County arrived in 1775 by boat from Georgia. They were led by Colonel James Moores who named their new settlement for General John Pemberton, who had helped repel British forces at Yorktown two years earlier.
