When the American Civil War began in 1861, Sumter was a small town in South Carolina. It is now a ghost town, abandoned and forgotten. The town was founded in 1839 by Methodist missionaries, who named it for their local church, the First Methodist Church of Sumtersville. The first people to live in what is now Sumter were white settlers from Georgia and Tennessee who came in search of new land to settle after the American Revolution. They arrived during the years 1785-1788, when Charleston was under siege by British forces. A group of these men, led by Captain James Kenedy, built a small cabin on present-day State Road B1A about three miles northeast of downtown Sumter on May 10th, 1785. This primitive settlement soon outgrew its confines and other pioneers soon followed suit until there were more than 100 people living in what is now Sumter when it was designated as a town on February 20th, 1839. The first post office in what is now Sumter opened on April 1st, 1836; however, it did not remain open long because none of the residents had letters or money to send mail with. The first store opened in what is now downtownSumter on October 5th, 1840; this store became known as Smith’s Store because its owner John Smith operated it for many years before moving away in 1870. In 1851 Postmaster General Amos Kendall decided that all mail should be sent through Charleston so he ordered Smith’s Store closed and replaced by an Exchange House which served as the town’s first courthouse until 1861 when Confederate troops burned it down whileInside! In 1850/1851 Congregationalist minister Reverend Elijah Hicks moved his family from Savannah to Cumming County SC to start a mission field school where he educated African American children called “Hicksites” or “Black Methodists” He started teaching Sunday school lessons at his home between 1830 and 1840 while also preaching services from his house which quickly grew into a large congregation with over 200 members When Rev Elijah died suddenly (aged just 36) no one knew how to replace him so two young women named Sarah Ann Sweetwater and Angelina Betts took charge Baptizing 400+ black boys & girls that year From everything they learned at Mrs Hicksite Mission field school they founded their own Baptist churchcalledFirst Baptist ChurchofSumtersvillein1860 sumtersville does not exist anymore but some buildings still stand

In retaliation for this attack and others conducted against Confederate sympathizers throughout the state during the war (see also "Ferguson's Massacre"), General Andrew Johnson ordered General Joseph Easley to march his brigade through Sumtersville on November 12th and 13th of that year with orders to burn all houses found therein excepting those belonging to military men or their families. The order caused great alarm among the citizens and a large amount of property was destroyed including many barns and dwellings used by farmers since they were unessential to military purposes. Thomas Asheborough then took command of Ferguson's brigade at Greenville leading an expedition into Kershaw County Searching for Ferguson's column but finding no evidence thereof he reported his findings back to Johnson who ordered him notto pursue any further investigations into what had happened at Sumtersville In 1865 when Confederate forces fought around Camden Yards near Charleston my troops charged our lines putting us completely off balance… we gave up very soon after being driven back with loss of life on both sides…. I think that if it hadn't been for a well directed charge from my brigade under Colonel Hardee I should have lost about five thousand men; however I am satisfied that Major-General Johnston would not have laid down his arms until he had secured possession of all Georgia before bringing them into compliance with your parole etcetera Aftermath: As African Americans began migrating northward following Reconstruction there followed sporadic clashes between black residents of rural areas along former Confederate lines and Jim Crow-era white supremacists known as “the posse” across newly freed states such as Alabama, Mississippi et cetera resulting in dozens killed or wounded each time these incidents occurred

Sumter was founded by the Welsh in 1780, and became a slave-holding outpost on the Savannah River. In 1820, Sumter was burned to the ground by the Confederate States of America during the Second Battle of Bull Run. The town resumed its growth in the 1830s as a cotton plantation center. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Sumter fell to Union forces and was destroyed.
