After the war ended in 1865, many freedmen returned to their homes around Spartanburg County where they founded sections of black churches and businesses such as Baptist Theological Seminary and Methodist Episcopal Church—the first black denominations established outsideof Africa/America with permanent congregations in America west of slavery times (1833-1968). In 1890–91 white farmers began moving into rural areas east of Interstate 25 along US 41 which bordered what is now Sumter County; these farmers replaced enslaved Africans who had cleared land along this route over time. This migration transformed farming practices throughout much Southern Africa because white people used horses and mules instead of Native Americans to plow fields due to superior soil quality; however this transition did not happen until after World War II when sharecroppers were displaced by tractor agriculture

In Sumter, South Carolina, on October 14, 1861, Confederate soldiers attacked a Union military installation. The attack resulted in the death of five Union soldiers and the wounding of thirty-six others. The Confederates were successful in achieving their goal of driving the Union forces out of town. This event is considered one of the most significant moments in South Carolina history.
