Gun targets have been a part of Sumter County, South Carolina's history for many years. The first target was erected in 1871 by the United States Colored Troops at Fort Sumter. From then until 1942, target shooting contests were held annually at various locations in and around the county. Rifle and shotgun rounds were fired at wooden targets which could be hit with either hand or foot. In 1942, the practice of target shooting was prohibited in South Carolina due to World War II military regulations. However, some people continued to shoot using traditional wooden targets until after the war ended. This activity is now known as "gunning down" or simply "target shooting."

Gun targets in Sumter, South Carolina date back to the early 1800s. The first guns used in this area were shotguns, which were primitive and not very accurate. However, over time, firearms became more sophisticated and better suited for hunting animals. Ammunition became available enough that hunters could shoot at game much farther than they ever could before. In 1805, a man by the name of John Davenport built a small fort on an island in the river below present-day Sumter. This fort was used as a place of refuge for white settlers during the Indian Removal War. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson moved his army into Sumter and began construction of Fort Moultrie on Anacostia Riverbank. The purpose of this fort was to keep white settlers from moving downriver and affecting land owned by black people. In 1825, General James Ewell destroyed Fort Moultrie and took its cannons south to build Fort Pickens on Elizabeth Island near modern Jacksonville Beach. This new fort was used as a military post until it was surrendered to Confederate forces in 1861. From 1861 to 1865, Sumter was occupied by Confederate forces while Charleston remained under Union control. During this time period, gun targets around town changed significantly; many businesses stopped selling ammunition because it was too dangerous for civilians to carry around large amounts of weapons around town with them (and also because there were no safe places for civilians to store their weapons). Gunfights often broke out between Union troops and Confederates who refused to leave their posts or surrender unconditionally. In 1865, Union troops withdrew from Sumter after losing the Battle of Appomattox Court House; most of the city's guns fell into Confederate hands Shortly thereafter, most all remaining gun targets within city limits were destroyed or looted by local mobs prior to being burned or abandoned altogether
Sumter is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1812 by William Sumter and laid out as a village on the east side of the Catawba River. The first post office in Sumter was established on July 1, 1814. In 1830, Sumter became a county seat and remains so to this day. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Sumter Confederate forces burned down Union-occupied buildings in downtown before retreating into battle. One of these buildings still stands today: The Masonic Temple (now called "The Lodge"). In 2006, Sumter voters approved an expenditure plan for $24 million for new infrastructure including roads and bridges; it is one of only two towns in South Carolina to have such approval from residents. The other being Myrtle Beach.

Sumter was a slaveholding town in Sumter County, South Carolina during the early 19th century. It was founded by white men in 1796 and grew to become a small town with a population of around 150 people. The town was located on the southern edge of the county, about two miles from its present-day location. The town first came into being as part of the original survey for the area that would later become Sumter County. The land that now makes up Sumter was originally owned by Hugh Swann, an Englishman who had purchased it from Native Americans in 1796. Swann's family continued to own and operate a plantation until 1829. In 1834, John Coker purchased land within the limits of what is now Sumter from Swann's heirs. Coker built himself a home here and named it "Coker House." In 1846, Confederate forces occupied Sumter while they were fighting against Union forces in southeastern South Carolina. After Confederate victory over Union forces at Battle of Bull Run, many residents decided to flee to North Carolina or Virginia due to political differences over slavery and Reconstruction policy. Many others remained behind and continued to live in Sumter until after World War II when it became an integrated community once again.
Sumter was founded in 1837 by Major John Sumter and his family. The town served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape to freedom. After the Civil War, Sumter became a major center of textile production. In 1865, it was renamed for General Robert E. Lee, who had fought in the war.
