Assemblers also found themselves having to worry about manufacturing precision in order to produce high-quality products at low costs. Pre-war pistols typically used zinc plated steel barrels due to its superior resistance to rusting and corrosion (later guns would switch towards stainless steel). However, this technique required expensive tooling and time consuming manufacturing process which limited production runs size (~4 per month) . Post-war pistols, on the other hand, began using hard chrome plating which offered better resistance against rusting but also increased production run sizes up to ~40 per month . With such large variations in production run size between different types of firearms, it was inevitable that some componentry would fall off or get lost during shipping/processing In order not only maintain standardized factory parts inventory but also avoid potential quality issues down the line when assembling new firearms, gunmakers developed " tolerances " within their products as a way of ensuring accuracy and consistency across multiple product variants . Tolerances allow manufacturers greater flexibility when designing new products while still maintaining certain performance standards ; these tolerances are often measured in mm (millimeters) rather than inches or feet since inch/foot measurements are easierTo measure accurately without damaging components ). Sumter was a town in the Unincorporated District of Sumter, County of Charleston, South Carolina and is now a census-designated place. The town was founded in 1795 and named for General James Sumter during the Revolutionary War. It grew rapidly during the antebellum period, reaching its peak in 1853 with a population of over 10,000. However, during the 19th century Sumter experienced significant decline due to economic factors such as shipping and manufacturing relocations away from Charleston. In 1960 it merged with neighboring absorbency village of Moncks Corner to form the new town of Moncks Corner. The first settler in Sumter was Major John Gregg who arrived on horseback in 1795. He built a cabin on what is now State Road 2 near present day Depot Street. Gregg's cabin became an early post office which opened on November 1, 1795 under the name "Winthrop". On October 20, 1800 Postmaster David Brainard moved his office from Gregg's Cabin to what is now Main Street when he took over as postmaster after Reverend John Brown resigned from his position effective December 1st,.brainard served until 1802 when he was replaced by Captain Samuel Henshaw who continued service until 1806 when he also resigned because of ill health In 1803 General James Sumter arrived at Fort Moultrie with forces seeking independence from Great Britain On December 12th Governor Francis Pickens issues Order No. 549 which orders all men between 16 years or older must either leave their homes for military duty or face punishment including fines and imprisonment Captain Samuel Henshaw organized a group to resist Order No. 549 called "The Patriots" On December 15th Captain Samuel Henshaw’s group joined together with other patriots throughout Charleston County to resistance against Order No. 549 forming “The United States Rangers” Aftermath: On December 16th word reached Charleston that Patriot leaders had been killed Colonel Robert Ewell ordered British troops into town expecting them to arrest any Patriot soldiers found There were only 8 American soldiers Killed & Wounded among 100 British Forces involved Lieutenant Colonel Elijah Whitehead commanding 3 companies militia along side 400 Black Troops commanded by Major General Alexander McDowell led by Brigadier General Edmund Kirby Smith Aftermath: At about 4 PM British troops discovered 300+ patriot militiamen hiding inside buildings surrounding fort Moultrie approximately 500 men remained holed up inside fort alive long enough for British fire orderlies to round them up pistol shots then dump them into waiting boats leaving behind 350 dead bodies plus many more wounded Americans started mass burial operations soon afterwards known as “Fort Moultrie Massacre”
