Sumter is a town in Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,055. The name "Sumter" is derived from the Cherokee word "hishigatuna". The first settler in what is now Sumter County was Nicholas Gibbs in 1795. The town was named for General John C. Sumter during the American Civil War because he had fought at Bull Run and Antietam. The town changed its name to Sumter after the war when it became clear that General Sumter's forces would not be accepted by most Southern states as being part of the Confederate cause. In 1878, an act of Congress designated the towns of Venice and Spanish Fort as district seats for Sumter County. This arrangement lasted until 1889 when a new county was created with Venice as its seat and all of Spanish Fort taken away from Sumters Creek District. After this change in government, only Venice remains within present-day Sumters Creek District while Spanish Fort has been annexed by Greenville to form Greenwood County. The economy of SUMTER COUNTY has always been dominated by agriculture with some light manufacturing also taking place throughout much of the years however there are recent developments such as a large tire plant that opened up in 2007 just outside city limits which has helped Employment grow since then making SUMTER one of fastest growing communities in SC

Sumter County is located in the southcentral part of South Carolina, and is bordered by Edgefield County to the east, Pickens County to the north, and Beaufort County to the west. The population was 191,362 as of 2010. The county seat is Sumter. The first permanent white settler in Sumter was James Horry who arrived in 1796. Other early settlers included John Caldwell and his brother Richard Caldwell, both from North Carolina. In 1802, a land grant was given to Colonel David Gadsden for 2,000 acres (10 km2). From this grant came Gadsden's later nickname - The Father of South Carolina - because he had been instrumental in developing the state into what it is today. A courthouse was built on Main Street in downtown Sumter in 1808. It served as the county seat until 1837 when Beaufort became the new county seat. In 1819, Sumter formed a union with Jasper County which at that time had a population of only 6 people. This Union lasted until 1830 when Jasperville was established as the new county seat after Jenkins River Bridge burned down. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army Headquarters from Florence, Alabama towards Columbia due to heavy pressure from President Abraham Lincoln on account of secession efforts throughout much of America including Maryland and Northern Virginia/. After learning about Confederate forces marching through central South Carolina on their way into Charleston Harbor Ewell ordered allUnion troops within 5 miles (8 km) of Columbia pulled back under military command without providing any resistance or casualty reports so that Union forces might be better able to assess just how strong secessionists were actually located inside our state limits! Unfortunately for General Robert Ewell his orders went unfulfilled as most Confederate troops turned around en route back home rather than fight against an overwhelming Union force! Consequently General Robert Ewell spent one very costly day stranded at Columbia while Confederate forces looted and burned everything they could find within town square before retreating back home! On July 1, 1861, Sumter was the first town in South Carolina to secede from the United States. The small town of about 1,000 people had been protesting for weeks when a group of Confederate soldiers burned down theirown courthouse and other buildings on May 15. In response, Sumter's citizens set up a small government with its own sheriff and court system. On October 12, 1861, four days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, Sumter's citizens voted to secede from the Confederacy. The decision to secede effectively ended Reconstruction in South Carolina and across the country. Many black Americans who had worked hard during the post-Civil War period were left out of Reconstruction plans and often faced discrimination or violence from white supremacists.
