Gun cleaning kits have been around for a long time in Sumter, South Carolina. The first such kit was created by Edwin Newton and is currently on display at the Sumter County Museum. This proposal was accepted and well-known firearms manufacturer Sam Colt followed suit soon after with his own kit designed specifically for cleaning pistols and revolvers. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many different companies manufactured gun cleaning kits including Winchester Firearms Company (later renamed Winchester Repeating Arms Company), Browning Armory Corporation, Sears / Roebuck & Co., Remington Arms Company etc. These Kits were typically marketed towards law enforcement officers and military members who used their weapons frequently or were required to take care of them regularly. It is interesting to note that many of these companies also produced personal hygiene products like toothpaste and shampoo during this time period which may have had some correlation with gun cleaning kits as well! In 1936, Sumter County purchased an old abandoned mill located near downtown Sumter from J C Ketchum & Sons Incorporated for $2,500 dollars cash only! This purchase marked the beginning of what would becomeSumter’s most famous tourist attraction – The Gun Museum! In 1945, following World War II when guns became more difficult to come by due to restrictions on importation into the United States from various countries, local manufacturers began production again of gun cleaning kits! Many of these firms continued production until the early 1960s when handgun manufacture ceased altogether in South Carolina due to political reasons related to Vietnam War efforts!

Sumter is a city in the southern part of South Carolina. The population was 21,558 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sumter County. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Sumter County was made by John Brown and his men on February 14, 1686, during the Pee Dee Expedition. After successfully repelling a British attack on February 15, they named their new colony "New Providence." In 1729, James Iredell founded nearby Spartanburg and named it for himself because he believed that all people were created equal. In 1730, Hezekiah Johnston built the first white mill in what is now Sumter County and naming it for General James Iredell relieved some pressure from neighboring Laurens County which had been experiencing an increasing amount of Indian attacks. In 1754, Colonel Richard Moultrie established Fort Moultrie as an outpost guarding trade routes between Charleston and Savannah. By 1802, Sumter had become a town with a courthouse and market place. A industries started to develop around this time: shipbuilding (the first African American to work in this industry), cotton ginning (the country's first), brewing (the first licensed brewery) and sugar cane production (the country's first). A fire destroyed much of these businesses around 1849 but began to be rebuilt soon after by locals including businessmen Elijah Broughton and Isaac Stevens who developed new methods such as open-air tanneries which became very important for early industrial development near downtown Sumter. The town also benefited from being located next to two major ocean ports— Charleston Harbor on one side and Savannah on the other— which made it very attractive for shipping companies looking for terminalside access to salt water products brought into North America from Asia through Savannah harbor

Sumter was a slave-holding town in the Lowcountry of South Carolina until the early 19th century. It is now a small community located in Sumter County, south of Charleston. The town first became known for its rich coal resources and its beautiful gardens, which remain today. The area now known as Sumter was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. In 1762, Francis Marion, an Independent planter, purchased land in what is now Sumter County from the Cherokee Indians. Marion built a plantation here and began to exploit coal seams near his home on Oconee Creek. His son John founded Marion Forge Company in 1794 and mined coal here until 1811 when he sold his interest to James Wilkinson. In 1814, General Robert Ewell captured Sumter from the Cherokee Indians during the War for Southern Independence. Ewell named it after himself, though little is known about this early settlement other than that it was located on some sugarcane plantations near Charleston Harbor. The town grew rapidly during these years due to its valuable resources and its location within easy reach of Charleston's major thoroughfares and markets. However, many slaves were brought over from Africa during this time and most of these people lived in bondage until they were freed by Union forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
In 1841, Sumter was the site of the first battle of the American Civil War. The skirmish occurred when Confederate forces attacked a Union regiment under General Robert E. Lee. The Union force was outnumbered and outgunned, and eventually surrendered.
