At first, bullets were not acceptable as firearms on account of their sharpness. However, over time, settlers found that bullet hitches worked very well for dealing with wild animals and Indians. In 1865, an ordinance was passed which made it a criminal act to use any kind of ammunition other than powder and shot for shooting game or engaging in common law warfare. This ordinance served as a WARNING to all citizens against using other kinds of ammunition than those specified under this ordinance. As the years went on, more and more cartridges were developed specifically for guns that fired Bullets instead of Powder and Shot. In 1876, Bullet No 7 was developed by Captain J H Loring while serving with Company A 1st Regiment South Carolina Volunteers during the American Civil War. The bullet is still popular today because it can penetrate many types of clothing without detonating

Sumter is a town in Lowndes County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Savannah metropolitan area. The Sumter post office was established in 1824 and discontinued in 1907. The town site was first settled by English colonists in 1778 and named for Colonel John Sumter, an officer of the British army who had fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. The name "Sumter" originated from a nearby stream which means "summer water." In 1886, the Sumter Commercial Hotel became the first building in what would become known as downtown Sumter. The city of Savannah annexed much of Lowndes County in 1898 but left rural Lowndes unincorporated until 1903 when it granted incorporation to Sumter. In 1904, Mayor Waddell appointed Aiken Easley as mayor and served until his death on November 7 that year; Easley's term expired on December 15th after serving one year without interruption. On January 9th 1915 Rufus Hargrave became Mayor with Waddell's resignation effective that day due to ill health; he served for four years before leaving office on November 5th 1919 due to another illness which caused him to retire from public life at age 79 years old. Thomas Fenton succeeded Hargrave and served as Mayor until his death on May 25th 1943 following a long career in law enforcement including 25 years as Sheriff of Lowndes County;Fenton also held various other governmental posts throughout his career including two terms as U S Senator from South Carolina (1948-1953). On April 3rd 1948 Spalding Gentry became Mayor & First Lady through marriage when Mrs Sarah Wheeler became Mrs Gentry after her husband died suddenly two months prior while they were living at home while he underwent surgery for colon cancer;Mrs Gentry continued to serve during her husband's final days numbered three: February 8th 1951- April 3rd 1948- Spalding Gentry officially took office as Mayor upon becoming MrsGentry’s fourth consecutive term expiring June 30th 1953 having been elected November 4th 1946 To date she has held every political appointment possible within government or outside it since taking office twenty nine years ago making her one of only six women ever to hold such an appointment—the others being Alice Paul ( delegate from Georgia), Eleanor Roosevelt (Ulysses S Grant’s wife), Medora Malone (First Lady Of Louisiana), Barbara Bush ( daughter Of George H.W Bush)

Sumter was founded in 1837 by Dr. James G. Barker and his wife, Lucy A. Barker. The town initially stood on the current site of Sumter with a small plantation called Post Office Hill. The first post office was opened in 1839 and the town became known as Sumter because of its location at the junction of two rivers, the Ashley and Appomattox. In 1860, Sumter was renamed for General Robert Easley who had fought in the American Civil War and also served as Secretary of War under President Andrew Johnson. In 1865, General Easley's widow donated land to form what is now downtown Sumter which included a school, a courthouse, an opera house and more importantly, the first Baptist church in South Carolina. In 1870, Sumter became one of six towns in South Carolina to become part of the newly formed State of South Carolina when it was created from parts of Virginia and North Carolina. The state capital moved from Columbia to Charleston in 1871, but Sumter remained its primary cultural center until after Reconstruction ended following America's civil war. Today, Sumters economic stability has helped it maintain its ranking among the most economically prosperous cities within South Carolina's metropolitan area. Additionally, sumters preserved much of its historical architecture which can be found throughout its neighborhoods including some original settler homes dating back to before colonization by humans occurred on this present-day cityscape

Sumter was founded in 1784 by three Revolutionary War veterans, John Sumter, James Patterson and William Heath. The town was named for General Sumter, who fought in the war. In 1814, the town became a county seat of Pickens County. In 1835, it became a state capital and remained so until 1910.
