However, many freed slaves continued to be held in bondage across much of southern Africa and Latin America until well into the 20th century. Sally died in 1938 at age 106 years old from natural causes.

Sumter was a slaveholding town in the state of South Carolina from 1820 to 1865. It is best known for its Battle of Sumter, fought on April 12, 1861, during the American Civil War. The battle resulted in the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. The town was founded by white settlers in 1820 as an agricultural and military outpost on a small rise along theast side of Sumter River. By 1830, it had developed into a town with a population of around 1,000 people. The first school in Sumter opened in 1828. The first post office was established in 1830. In 1840, black slaves were brought over from Africa and put into slavery here under indentured servitude until their freedom was granted by the United States government upon passage of the fugitive slave law in 1850. By 1860, Sumter had over 4500 residents who were enslaved or free labor within its walls; however, only about 100-150 men and women participated actively in any form of militancy against Union forces outside of their homes or workplaces (the vast majority being self-sacrificing volunteers). On April 12th 1861—just days after Abraham Lincoln became president—the greatest effort ever made by blacks to unite against white supremacy came to fruition when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House without any fight whatsoever following days heavy shelling and artillery fire from Union forces stationed nearby; this event marked what has been called "the turning point" moments leading up to civil war erupting two years later that would ultimately see more than 620 million casualties across all sides including over 60% civilian fatalities alone
Sumter was founded in 1837 by John C. Sumter as a small town on the banks of the Savannah River. The town grew slowly, but steadily, and in 1871 it became a city when it merged with nearby Columbia. The city's growth led to its incorporation as a county in 1889. In 1934, Sumter County was renamed Marion County after General George A. Marshall, who served as Commander-in-Chief of United States Army during World War II and president of the United States from 1939 to 1945.
