BB guns have been around in Sumter, South Carolina for over 100 years. The first BB guns were designed to shoot round balls and pails of paint. They were called “ball pistols” and could be used by children as early as the 1860s. These pistols were made from blackstrap leather, cut down a tree, and then wrapped with red cloth. They would be ridden around town during Carnival to see who could get the most shots off at a target. In 1865, the first BB gun manufacturers in Sumter opened their doors. Many of these companies survive today, producing high-quality firearms that can still be enjoyed today. BB guns are not just for kids anymore! In fact, many adults enjoy using them too! For those who may not know, BBS ( Barbary Barbary Shooters ) is an annual event that takes place in Sumter County that pits adult shooters against each other in a range-style competition shootout game involving handguns and shotguns. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, July 20th at 4pm EDT at the Freedom Park Shooting Range located in downtown Sumter. There will also be food trucks available for purchase inside the park throughout the day! So come out and join in on this fun day!

The Sumter County ordinance of 1867 regulated the carrying of firearms in the county. On July 1, 1861, Sumter County became part of Confederate States of America. In 1865, the General Assembly passed a bill that authorized handgun possession by state troopers and provided for licensing and registration of handguns. In 1870, a new ordinance regulating handguns was passed. The ordinance stated that all handguns were to be registered with the sheriff and that anyone who possessed more than one handgun was guilty of a Class A misdemeanor. On May 10, 1871, a group of men armed with pistols invaded the home of John Witherspoon and shot him three times while he slept in his bed. Witherspoon’s daughter was also shot during this attack. A gun control law was passsed in 1872 which limited handgun possession to those who were licensed by local governments and required an annual license fee for each pistol bought or possessed. On November 15, 1876, another act regulating handguns was passed which states that any person owning two or more pistols must file an application with the sheriff stating how many guns they own and when they last had them inspected/licensed/registered. In 1877 a new ordinance establishing regulations for carry weapons in unincorporated areaswaspassedand requires residents to produce identification when requested to carry a weapon into their home or place of business
Sumter is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,717 at the 2010 census. It is the largest municipality in and the county seat of Spartanburg County. The town was founded by white settlers in 1851 and incorporated as a city on May 7, 1907. The Sumter Historic District encompasses over of buildings dating from 1790 to 1910 in Sumter village and surrounding areas. It is one of only a few districts designated as part of the National Register of Historic Places in South Carolina. In 1903, following an election campaign that resulted in secession by certain Sumter residents from then-Union (South Carolina) government, Mayor James Witherspoon established a municipal court with trial jurisdiction over all civil cases except for criminal prosecutions and those brought before state or federal grand juries. The municipal court continued until 1957 when it was replaced by the present county courthouse complex; however, portions of the old Municipal Court building still stand today as part of downtown Sumter's civic center. The city was organized on May 7, 1907 from parts of Union (now Spartanburg) Township. On November 10, 1916–the day after World War I began—Sumter became one of seventeen municipalities across South Carolina to join forces with Beaufort County to form the new Department of Public Works

Sumter County, South Carolina is located in the southeastern part of the United States. The county was formed on December 12, 1821 from parts of Beaufort and Carteret counties. It named after Sumter, an early settler in the area. The population of Sumter County was 1,409 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settlement in what is now Sumter County was made by John Ledbetter and his family around 1795 on a plantation that he purchased from James Stephens. By 1820, some residents had built log cabins and started to cultivate land. In 1821, following Indian removal policies of the Ulysses S. Grant administration, most of the indigenous peoples in this area were forcibly removed and resettled into other counties in southeast Georgia and southeast Florida. As a result of this event known as “the Removal Act” many African Americans were also relocation to what is now Sumter County for lack of another opportunity to find land or because they had no choice but to leave their homes due to racism towards them at that time Throughout much of this period slaveowners still managed their plantations through racial segregation which limited access to education and employment opportunities for slaves while wealthy white landowners continued owning large portions of these lands The first courthouse in what is now Sumter County was erected on a location near present day Springdale along with several other buildings including a jail and schoolhouse between 1824-1827 when it became known as Uniontown In 1830–31 Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Uniontown during an attempt by General Robert E Lee to move southward across central Alabama toward Richmond under cover of darkness resulting in one dead Confederate sergeant, 24 male prisoners (including 11 officers) plus three horses killed or captured
Sumter County was formed in 1831 from portions of Spartanburg County. The county seat was Sumterville. The county population was 7,868 at the 2010 census.
