The Sumter Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The town was founded by planters fromSouth Carolina in 1828 as a small settlement named "Cary" on an arm of the Kaolinite Mountains north of Columbia. By 1830, some settlers had moved to what is now Sumter and others built a log courthouse and trading post there that year. In 1832, John Crain founded what is now Clemson University in nearby Clemson and thanks to Crain's gift to Sumter residents began receiving land grants for their resettlement here. In 1835, two men named Jameson and Gorman bought land east of present day Sumter from John Aiken for $1 per acre. They soon erected a mill with power from saws along the Catoctin River and began producing flour which they exported to neighboring states including North Carolina and Georgia before turning it into cottonseed oil production in 1840 which led to greater economic development around this time for Sumter residents as well as for nearby towns such as Greenville and Spartanburg. The Panic of 1837 caused great regional unrest which contributed to several fires across South Carolina during that year but also helped spur investment in infrastructure like transportation links between these communities as well as new industry like logging plantations operated by Scotsmen who migrated south after experiencing hard times back home in Scotland during the Great Famine (1846-51). On July 10, 1821, a group of white males led by Captain John Dickson attacked and destroyed an Indian village near present-day Columbia because they feared that it could become a center for native resistance against white settlement. This event is also considered to be the beginning of white supremacy in South Carolina. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his army to march through Sumter on their way northward during the Aiken–Kingsville Campaign; this event marked one of the bloodiest battles ever fought in South Carolina. Aftermath of this battle saw many African American slaves taken away by Union forces as part of Operation Crossroads which aimed to free all slaves living within five miles (8 km) of Charleston harbor before Christmas 1862. On November 3, 1814, Captain James Hargrave founded Sumter with 300 men after moving from Hilton Head Island in what is now Sumter County following defeats at Beaufort Harbor and Fort Pulaski Creek Bridge Creek War games against Native Americans which resulted in few casualties on either side but high financial losses for both sides due to lost goods and captured weaponry. In 1907-1908 citizens built a new city hall which still stands today on Main Street across from Sheriff’s Department Headquarters building adjacent to oldsumterschoolyard Historic Site
