Summerville is a town in Anderson County, South Carolina. It was founded in 1829 by pioneers who came from Georgia. The summerville post office was established in 1835. In 1865, General James Longstreet's Confederate army camped here for three weeks during the Battle of Gettysburg. Some of the soldiers here are buried at nearby Gettysburg National Military Park. AALD built a large brick courthouse and four smaller buildings around it in 1872-73 based on designs provided by Philadelphia architect James Hoban. The courthouse served as a landmark until it burned down in 1903 after heavy use by county officials during Reconstruction years. After several failed attempts at incorporation throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s,Summerville finally became incorporated as a village in 1912 under then-mayor J H Wilkinson Sr.. At this point,SummerVILLE had only 230 residents; however, it grew rapidly through annexation of surrounding villages over the next few decades until reaching its current size of just under 2K residents today (as of 2018).
