The predominant industry in Summerville until the early 21st century was agriculture, with some small businesses remaining active into the mid-2000s. However, since then there has been significant growth in both economy and community involvement within several sectors including professional services, tech companies and government service agencies. Theforemans donated land to build a town square and schoolhouse on what is now Main Street. In 1835, the first post office opened in Summerville; it was called "Fayette." The name of the town changed to "Summerville" on May 12, 1882, when it became part of the newly created Pickens County. The summer heat brings out many things in people: music festivals are popular here because of their close proximity to Myrtle Beach; swimming is popular because of its clearwater environment; baseball games are always played here because of its fertile landscape; and there are also many small businesses that thrive during this time period such as gas stations and grocery stores which serve up all sorts of food from locally grown produce to heavy processed foods
Summerville was founded in 1790, during the early years of South Carolina. It was named for a summer season that occurred thereabouts. The first post office in Summerville was established in 1809. In 1860, it became the town of Summerville. On July 1, 1865, it became a parish within the Diocese of Charleston. On February 3, 1871, the parishioners voted to become an independent congregation and on March 16 they did so. The first pastor of our congregation was Rev. John French and he served until his death on September 11th, 1911. Reverend Drury Witherspoon officiated from 1923-1929; Rev. Arthur Fryer from 1929-1939;Rev Exeter Hirsch from 1939-1945. The current pastor is Father Jerome Cheatum who began his ministry on November 15th, 2016
