Summerville is a small town located in Summerville County, South Carolina. It was founded in 1881 by Englishman, John Nance Garner. Garner named the town after his plantation, Holston House. The original population of Summerville was only 60 people. However, within 5 years of its founding, the town had grown to over 100 people and quickly became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Garner also played a significant role in helping to develop the cotton industry in Summerville. He owned several plantations and oversaw the development of various industries in the area. His contributions to Summerville are still deeply felt today. Today, Summerville is home to a number of interesting museums and businesses related to its history. Summerville is a town in central South Carolina, United States, located on the Savannah River. The population was 9,558 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville– Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General James A. Fairchild in 1824 as a trading post on the confluence of the Patowmack and Savannah Rivers. The area now known as Summerville was originally part of Cherokee Nation and was first settled by white families in 1835 and named after General James A. Fairchild's home state of Georgia. In 1865, Confederate forces burned down Summerville to destroy all evidence of their rebellion against Union forces during the American Civil War. In 1863, Summerville became a station on the newly created Charleston & Augusta Railroad which ran between Charleston and Augusta, Southeastern South Carolina. In 1865, it also became a station on the new Atlantic Coast Railway which connected Camden, New Jersey with Augusta and points beyond. Summerville experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction following the end ofthe Civil War due to its location along railroads and its access to markets for goods produced in nearby counties outside of South Carolina such as Georgia and North Carolina. During this time period, summerlinesthat extended into northeastern South Carolina were developed around Summersvilleville (now Columbia), Greeneville (now Henderson), Morningside Heights (now Midtown Memphis), Lenoir City (Now Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport), Indian Head Junction (Now Hawkinsboro), Romeowne (now Mount Pleasant) and Pee Dee Junction (Now Gastonia). These towns had little resemblance to what they are today because they were generally built around railroad tracks or other means of transportation that allowed them easy access to markets outside their communities
Summerville was founded in 1799 by the Rev. James Moultrie. The town grew rapidly and soon had a library, post office, cotton gin, and other businesses. After the American Revolution, Summerville became an important center for patriotic sentiment. It hosted a number of meetings to discuss new U.S. government policies and also played an important role in the foundation of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1819. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army from nearby Fort Sumter to Summerville so that he could more easily control the area and intimidate local residents into supporting him. This event is generally considered to have led to the Battle ofsumter which ended with United States victory over Confederate forces
