It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1856 and named for General John C. Summerville, who fought in the American Civil War as a colonel. Summerville has been governed by a Board of Trustees since 1870. The first school in town was built on land donated by Major John Pritchard and opened in 1857. In 1865, the first post office was established here and summerville continued to grow until it had a population of 2,500 by 1880. In 1886, Congress passed an act entitled "An Act To Establish A School In Summerville" which provided for the construction of a school building on what is now Main Street. The first teachers were hired from England and many Americans also contributed money to help pay for the school’s construction.The school opened on September 3rd, 1886 with 50 students and 10 teachers (including 5 women).
