Summerville, SC is known for itsguns and ammunition. It has been a stronghold of the local gun industry for over 100 years. The city was founded in 1876 by two Englishmen named John Summerville and James Guthrie. The first Guns and Ammunition store opened in 1879. In 1896, the city became the home to summerville Arms Company, which manufactured firearms and ammunition. From 1898-1904, the company was located at 827 Elm Street. In 1903, the city passed an ordinance regulating handguns. This law allowed citizens to own pistols with a barrel less than 16 inches long or shotguns with a magazine capacity of more than five rounds without having to obtain a license from the police department. From 1907-1966, Summerville Arms Company produced rifles under three different brands: Winchester (1907-1909), Colt ( 1911 ), and Browning (1920-1924). In 1926, Winchester merged with Remington Arms Company and production stopped at Summerville Arms Company. The Gun Control Act of 1968 made it illegal for any person who is not licensed to possess guns to purchase or sell firearms in America without first getting a license from state or federal authorities. This law was repealed in 1990 after being challenged in court. In 1994-1996,Summerville Arms Company produced two revolvers called "Sugar Hill" models as part of its promotional campaign for South Carolina's presidential election that year between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole. These revolvers were intentionally designed so they looked similar to .357 Magnum revolver designs popular at that time - complete with embellishments such as pearloid cases, goldsmithing on trigger groups, etc... However there were no barrels available that would fit these revolvers so they were eventually redesigned as 9mm Glock pistols instead

The town was founded in 1838 by General Daniel Boone as a settlement on the site of what is now Summerville Lake. From its earliest days, it flourished as a trade center due to its location upstream from the great Indian hunting grounds in eastern South Carolina and its access to water supplies available only during low times. A post office was established in 1839, and within a few years had become one of the most important points of distribution for goods arriving by boat or railway through Spartanburg County. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Summerville sided with Confederate forces against Federal troops under Ulysses S. Grant; however, after Union forces destroyed many Confederate homes and mills in early 1865, most residents returned to Union lines supportin Grant's reelection campaign that fall. In 1870, John Matson purchased land east of town from Genl Dan Boone for $3 per acre (approximately ?). This land became known as Matson's Valley because it lay between Summerville on the north and Valley Forge on the south bank of Broad River). Matson erected several log buildings near his new home which he named "Summerville" after his home state – Virginia – where he had been born in 1785. The first school building was built in 1876 using funds raised by local subscription and opened to teach children up to age 10 how to read and write English. summervilleyitselfbecame an incorporated village on October 9th 1896 when all original landowners organized into one entity "Summervillians Inc." With over 2000 residents at its peak during World War II (1941-1945), many businesses were set up along Matson Avenue including Piggly Wiggly restaurants operated by military personnel stationed there such as Stonewall Jackson High School Cadets who cooked their food inside while their instructors gave them afternoon classes in mathematics and science; First Presbyterian Church built specifically for community services with services like Sunday morning church services open 24/7 for those unable or unwilling to attend regular churches; More than 20 cotton ginners operated out of various homes across town during WW2 providing much needed employment opportunities for locals; some 20 large grocery stores were operating alone or together full time during WWII selling everything from gasolineoline & cigarettes to cocoa & candy bars; Numerous factory jobs were created throughout WWII manufacturing munitions including aircraft parts & engines; Post Office closed February 15th 1951 but reopened April 1st 1951 serving primarily retail customers until it closed again September 3rd 1976 effective thereby ending retail operations within town limits permanently
