The community was named for Dr. John Cate Summerville, an early settler. Summerville was founded by Dr. John Cate Summerville on land he purchased from the Cherokee Nation in 1851. He built a small log cabin and began to conduct medical services for the local settlers. In 1855, he purchased more land and founded the town of Summerville on what is now Main Street. The town grew rapidly and soon had a school, mercantile store, Baptist church and other public buildings. In 1870, it became a county seat and remained so until 1907 when it was moved to Greeneville to serve as that county's seat
Summerville was founded in 1795 by Captain John Maynard and his wife, Peggy. The town was named for the hot summer days that used to occur there. The first settler in Summerville was James McMillin who built a cabin on the edge of town in 1800. In 1807, Captain John Maynard sold land to Thomas Reid and David Sward for $2 per acre. In 1824,Captain James McMillin donated a piece of land to Summerville for its library which still stands today. On July 4th, 1830, Summerville became a town when it voted to incorporation by the County Legislature. It had a population of about eighty people. In 1851, Captain John Maynard donated another piece of land to Summerville for its courthouse building and jail which still stands today. On December 7th, 1860, the townsfolk voted to join forces with neighboring Uniontown in order to form an early cotton-growing community known as "The Cotton Belt." In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded South Carolina during the Civil War and participated in the Battle of Missionary Ridge nearSummerville Junction. Aftermath of this battle resulted in over seventy dead soldiers and civilians including many children who were playing nearby on that day.Uniontown quickly developed into one of the most heavily populated areas within Confederate territory after the war ended butSummerville continued as an agricultural community until about 1880 when it began experiencing rapid population growth due mainly to white migration from other parts of South Carolina into Summerville looking for new opportunities following Reconstruction (1861-1877).
