It is a relic from a time when South Carolina was a major center for firearms manufacturing. The Summerville Gun Sight is a replica of an 18th century firearm sight known as the “Tower” sight. The Tower sight was designed by Daniel Webster and patented in 1795. It comprised two iron circles that rotated to direct fire at a target placed on an elevated platform. It has also been used by law enforcement officers and firefighters, as well as hunting enthusiasts who use it to view deer or other game from close range.

In 1907, Jens Petersen erected the first permanent gun sights in South Carolina when he installed them at his Rifle Practice Ground on Main Street in Summerville. These sights consisted of three circles that were located centrally on a stake and could be adjusted to provide perfect sighting for rifles or shotguns from multiple directions simultaneously. In 1920, Julius Wadding purchased the rifle practice ground from Jens Petersen and began operating it as Springdale Rifle Range & Ammunition Shop. In 1926, Wadding added a fourth circle to his sights which provided excellent target shooting opportunities for residents of Springdale Village/Summerville Combined Statistical Area (CSA). Today, Springdale Rifle Range & Ammunition Shop is still one of the most populargun retailers in South Carolina with its wide variety of firearms products available online and through their physical store locations throughout the CSA area!
Summerville is located in the state of South Carolina, within the Myrtle Beach metropolitan area. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. Summerville is a small town that is home to a variety of businesses and cultural attractions. The primary attraction for locals and visitors alike is the summer tourist season as well as its sister town of Georgetown. Summerville began as a post office on October 6, 1871, according to the United States Post Office Museum. It was named for General James A. Summerville, who served in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. The first postmaster was Mrs. Margaret Todd Hargrave and it remained an active post office until February 15, 1907. In 1916, Summerville became part of Georgetown County when it was created from parts of Beaufort County. As with most rural areas in South Carolina during this time period, farming played a significant role in summer life hereabouts and many buildings still remain from pioneer days including: the old courthouse which still stands today; local blacksmith shop; gathering place for farmers early morning or late evening before doing their chores; stores such as Sperry & Company (a grocery store now closed); two churches - one newly built in 1915-16 by Jno Ladd & Son who were also instrumental in developing downtown Summerville into what it is today; three schools - Gibson High School (now closed), Stonington Elementary School (closed) and Queen's Chapel Catholic school which opened in 1938; three Baptist Churches - First Baptist Church (opened 1902), Second Baptist Church (1896) and Third Baptist Church (1909). The first recordedifestation of summer tourism came about when Jno Ladd & Sons constructed two Hotel Nacoochee on Pee Dee Boulevard just east of Main Street between 1912-13 after seeing an opportunity to compete with other travel agencies operating out of Charleston at that time. At first summers were spent outdoors working on farms or visiting friends while downtown experienced limited traffic due to lack of streetcar service back then! Since then there have been many changes to how tourists experience summertime here at Summerville including popular events like Fourth Of July fireworks shows over Beaufort Harbor hosted by Stonington Fire Department annually since 1978 along with several smaller festivals throughout each year like PumpkinFestivals Ole Miss HomecomingVoodoo Fest etc., but no less than twelve restaurants have opened up around town catering specifically to tourists throughout all 3 seasons which means you can always find something new to enjoy!
