It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun in Summerville was a muzzleloader made by Nicholas Slaton in 1819. It was used for target shooting and harvest hunting. The first firearms were handguns created by John Moses Browning in 1842. They were used to protect farmers from Indians and local outlaws during the antebellum period. In 1865, Julius Cockerill patented an improved revolver called the Colt Pistol which became popular among law enforcement officers and civilians alike. After Cockerill's death in 1868, his patent expired and many other gun designers followed suit soon after. This led to increased production of pistols which caused firearm manufacturers to become very profitable early on in American history. Many of America's most famous presidents have been involved with firearm ownership or have worn firearms on their person as part of their official duties. George Washington personally owned four guns including two pistols and one rifle while he served as president; James Krieger also had several handguns during his time as Governor of South Carolina; Abraham Lincoln owned five shotguns between 1861-1865; Franklin D Roosevelt also possessed three pistols while serving as President (two revolvers and one shotgun) During World War II, many South Carolinians volunteered their time to serve abroad with distinction both before and after Pearl Harbor when they became eligible for military service under the Selective Service Act of 1942. However, General Robert Easley decided not to move his headquarters to Springdale after learning about Union forces moving into nearby Greeneville and Johnston County。 Consequently, at least some part of Summerville stayed with Confederates until 1865 when Union troops took control of the area
