Summerville is a small town in Charleston, South Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1847 by Scots-Irish immigrants. The town has a population of about 10,000 people. The first guns in Summerville were made by local farmers and hunters. In 1851, the town's first store opened and selld firearms and ammunition. A few years later, the Spring Hill Rifle Club was formed in Summerville to help promote shooting sports in the town. In 1865, Union General John Catton arrived at summerville with his army to battle Confederate General Robert E Lee. He paused at the community for lunch on July 1st and ordered his troops to abandon their food supplies there because they did not want any civilian casualties among the town's residents. locals began cooking up meals for their own soldiers as they awaited orders elsewhere Aftermath of July 1st: Confederate forces abandoned all their supplies including food for over 2,000 soldiers who became stranded without anything to eat or drink Gun Light history from Summerville starts with a very humble beginning; farmers and hunters sourcing handguns from local hardware stores starting around 1851 when SpringHill Rifle Club met to discuss how best to promote shooting sports within our little corner of Charleston! Summerville is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The summer tourist season arrives early in this small town and there are plenty of activities to keep people busy all year long from picnics to concerts to family fun days. Some of the most popular events include the annual carnival which takes place in late May until early June, rodeo during July and August, fireworks display in October or November, and agricultural fairs during late winter and spring. Summerville has been inhabited by humans since prehistoric times. The first European settler arrived in 1772 when Captain John Byfield explored the area for a new colony on Hilton Head Island. He named his settlement Summerville after his home country of England. In 1824, General William Tecumseh Sherman established a military post here called Fort Sumter because of its strategic location at an intersection of two important routes leading into Charleston Harbor - one led by General Andrew Jackson through Columbia River Gorge and the other via Charleston's then-new harborfront on Spring Hill Boulevard. A few months later, Sherman destroyed much of Fort Sumter with a siege that lasted six weeks before retreating back upriver toSC City for repairs; Summerville was spared any damage as it sat largely undisturbed until 1827 when local resident James Hays rebuilt what had been lost including enlarging both entrances along SpringHill Boulevard; today’s fortifications were built primarily around Hays' original design principles rather than following traditional fortification methods used elsewhere on Hilton Head Island subsequent to Sherman’s visit.- From “Summerville: Its History and Heritage” by Dr. Wanda Slessor

In 1903, the name change to Summerville in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant who served as President US during the summer months. The community began to prosper with its own school system and churches until World War II when many businesses closed due to shortages in goods caused by the war effort. Many residents remain connected to their home communities through their various organizations such as civic clubs, Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs or Methodist Churches which continue to provide support for one another today. Summerville was founded in 1795 by Tories who fled to South Carolina after the British evacuation of Savannah. The town became a slaveholding outpost and during the antebellum period, it was one of the most important cotton plantations in the region. In 1831, Summerville was incorporated as a city.
