Summerville is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 935 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Summerville is one of the oldest towns in Spartanburg County and was founded by English settlers in 1799. The first summer home built in what is now Summerville was a log cabin on the banks of Broad Creek. In 1825, John Cranch erected a large frame house on land then belonging to his father-in-law, Major General James Johnston. A post office was established at Summerville in 1827, and mail continued to be delivered from Johnston's home until 1865. In 1830, Colonel Alfred Waddell purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of upland along Broad Creek for $2 per acre (0.10 pesetas). He named it "Summerville" in honor of his friend and patron Lord Byron who had supported him during his military campaigns throughout Scotland and Ireland during that decade. In 1833, he laid out a village streets plan which included three blocks north of Main Street with two blocks east of Court Street and one block south of High Street; they were designed as an attractive open marketplace surrounded by brick buildings for public worship or business purposes only: Trustees House (now known as the separately owned Springdale Baptist Church), Old School House and Post Office Building remain today within those boundaries; Center Block consisted of five stories high with an attached wing providing internal space for market stalls selling groceries, hardware, books etc.; upper floors served as bedrooms for male residents while lower floors became workshops; Mr.� Waddell's Store on First Floor East served as both storeroom and kitchenette until it burned down in 1886; Lieutenant Governor John Settle also contributed funds towards building State House located at present day Broad River off US Highway 98 just outside town limits - this structure would eventually become the capitol building - President James Buchanan resided here during much of 1860s when he had temporary residence elsewhere due to illness or travel Many early residents helped organize local churches including Methodist Episcopal Church which built its first church on Main Street (now called Christmastime Plaza) between 1830-1834; Presbyterian Church followed suit soon after In 1840s many more farmers arrived following enhanced farming opportunities brought about by new transportation methods such as railroads which allowed goods to be transported long distances cheaper than before . By 1850 most people living around Summerville were Methodists but there were also Baptists, Presbyterians and Congregationalists among them . One resident described their religious affiliation back then as follows: “We are all Methodists—I am old enough to remember how we worshipped” . Some additional terms used to describe these various denominations at that time include "Church," "Methodist," "Congregationalist," "Proprietary Baptist." However because so many people lived near each other there was little denominational diversity overall - everyone simply subscribed to whatever religion suited their needs at that time
