The first summer movement to Summerville began in 1817 when General John Brown and his men arrived from Kentucky to help fight in the American Revolution. They were met with hostility by local residents who saw them as invaders. However, Brown's men are considered patriots because they fought for their country even though they did not have much money or weapons. After the war ended, many of those who had fought in it moved back into South Carolina and started businesses here including an inn called The Hermitage which still stands today. One such business owner was James Fenton who built a cotton gin next to his farm which allowed him to make good money while also providing employment for rural families during economic hard times. In 1856, Fenton donated land to build what would become Summerville High School which helped give birth to one of its most famous alumni - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. After he became assassinated in 1968, Summerville experienced its first riots since Reconstruction occurred when white supremacists attempted to take over the high school campus. However, despite these challenges and some negative experiences throughout history, Summerville has managed to maintain a strong sense of community that has helped it become known as one of America’s most diverse towns –no matter what your race or ethnicity may be!
