Summerville, South Carolina is a small town located in Burke County, South Carolina. It was founded on July 4th, 1814 by Captain James Cook and his party of British sailors. The town was named for the summer sun that shines in Summerville. The town has a population of about 10,000 people and it is the largest community within Burke County. The company manufactured pistols and revolvers until 1865 when it merged with Remington Arms Company to form the Remington-Rand Corporation. In 1898, Colonel George Armstrong Custer set off from Independence (Missouri) on an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Canadian River into Canada under cover of darkness with 515 cavalrymen and 100 infantrymen led by General John Pershing as part of Operation Buffalo Bill. On July 16th he reached Fort Bridger ( Wyoming), 7 miles west of present day Summerville after having traveled overland through harsh terrain for more than two days without food or water; his force consisted only of 117 men including 20 artillery horses who all died during this long journey home Custer’s desperate effort marked one of history’s most dramatic military failures – but also one of America’s earliest examples of air power at war Summerville residents were among those who commemorated Custer’s legacy when they erected a large granite memorial near Main Street on July 24th annually known as “Custer's Birthday."

The first post office closed on October 16, 1865, due to lack of mail service from Charleston to Summerville. In 1924, a new cotton gin and sawmill were built at the edge of town by local entrepreneur Waddell Craines Jr.. In 1951, a fire destroyed most of the downtown buildings inSummerville but only caused minor damage to businesses on Main Street. In 1984, an amusement park called "Dolphin" opened here with rides such as bumper cars, swings, Legos and more. It closed in 2001; however some parts of it remain standing today including an observation deck accessible through an entrance near the library which features views over downtown Charleston
