White farmers and others who could not leave were required to provide food for black residents until they could find new homes or forfeit their land. The order caused great commotion and soon led to calls for boycotts by some whites who felt they had been wronged by blacks who had chosento stay put. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down Uniontown while occupying nearby Pickens County and began moving black residents west into Uniontown on a large scale expulsion designed as retribution for Confederate actions throughout south Alabama such as burning federal buildings and driving families from their homes near Mobile Bayou during July 1861 known as "the Burning Season." By 1865, most black residents had either fled or moved away from Pickens County altogether because there was no safe place for them to live outside Uniontown garrisoned by Confederates under General Robert Ewell's command. Black people living within 500 yards (500 meters) of any military installation or fortifications were placed under house arrest until forced migration could be accomplished elsewhere. This policy continued into the 20th century when few if any places remaining in which blacks could reside outside Uniontown experienced similar levels of violence/social unrest due to white militancy/discrimination against blacks until after World War II when integration became more widespread throughout southern South Carolina through legislation like "The Housing Act" which allowed integrated housing developments throughout rural areas across the state without prior approval from white dominant municipalities like Spartanburg where discrimination still prevailed today against all races other than whites only inside their own neighborhoods – excluding mixed-race Englishes such as myself [born Caucasian]).
