A subscription drive led to construction of a one-room schoolhouse on Cemetery Hill in 1859; this school served until 1862 when it burned down due to an accidental fire set by students playing with matches outdoors. In 1861, Spartanburg became the capital of Laurens County after its creation from parts of Cherokee and Union counties

The townspeople built their first courthouse in 1819 and the first school in 1825. Spartanburg became an incorporated city on April 24, 1886. In 1907, the city annexed the neighboring town of Laurens. Today, Spartanburg is a bedroom community for the greater Charleston area and has a population of over 100,000 people.
