In 1835 an act was passed by the General Assembly creating Spartanburg County with its own government and court system. Thereafter Spartancity grew rapidly with new development around Town Square including several cotton plantations that had been developed for slave labor by planters during Reconstruction; these plantations were lost to economic decline during the Great Depression years of 1930-1939 when transportation limitations made them uneconomical to operate. During World War II many factories were located near downtown Spartanburg due to its strategic location between two major military supply depots–New Bern and Jacksonville Georgia–and nearby airfields such as Drew Air Force Base (NOAAP), Greer Army Airfield (GAAP), Fort Bragg (FORT BRAGG) and Morehead Army Airfield (Morehead AFB). Many people worked at these factories during World War II including many African Americans who served in racial unit segregated into all races American forces throughout much of Europe where they received special training at schools like Camp Forrest near Birmingham Alabama before being sent home Upon return they resumed their old jobs but without benefits or education opportunities because race still determined one's place in society At this time Negroes could not serve openly in any branch of service like whites did During World War II there was no draft so black soldiers enlisted through underground networks most notably within officer corps

As their homesickness grew increasingly manifest, some began searching for ways to return home while still able to contribute materially to their new country. One such effort was founded by John Gregg, one of these original settlers from Scotland: The Scottish Home Mission Society (SHMS). This organization helped provide food and lodging forSoldiers returning home from battle as well as providing education and religious services forGI veterans seeking passage back home aboard ships full of refugees escaping Confederate hostilities at sea. In 1881, John Gregg established SHMS in Spartanburg as an effort similar to his predecessors’ Scottish Home Mission Society endeavor back home in Scotland. His goal was not only to provide food and lodgings for Soldiers returning home from battle but also to offer education and religious services exclusively available to GI veterans seeking passage back home aboard ships full of refugees fleeing Confederate hostilities at sea – something that had not yet been attempted in America at that time!joined forces with local entrepreneur Jethro Gibbs (known today simply as “Jethro”) who ran a successful store on Main Street downtown until 1886 when he leased space on Church Street where he would continue operation until his death two years later.>> For several years there existed no organized Masonic Lodge or Shrine hereabouts; however we did hold our annual meeting here [in 1886] under special auspices due mainly theretofore due tho lack ol proper facilities being erected then for these purposes….
