Spartanburg is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 10,479 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Savannah, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Spartanburg has been called the "City of Oaks" for its many oak trees and green lawns. The first settler in what is now Spartanburg was James Chilton who built a cabin in 1786 on land that he purchased from the Cherokee nation. In 1820, John C Calhoun donated 8,000 acres (3 km2) to Spartanburg as part of his reconciliation efforts with Great Britain after the War of 1812. In 1835, 1 acre (0.4 ha) was given to Gideon Welles to help establish an academy which would become one of the most famous schools in America. In 1850, Confederate General Robert E Lee and his wife Elizabeth were married at Greeneville Presbyterian Church in Sparta by Reverend Aiken STEMBARGER while their minister Newton APPERSON officiated. After their marriage they moved to Tullahoma Hill where they lived until 1861 when they moved back to Sparta and later became residents of Rockingham County before moving back east again and settling near Lexington, Kentucky in 1922. Elizabeth died there on October 15th 1923 leaving her husband with two young children: Lt Col Robert E Lee II (1896-1970), Jr., and Dr Rachel Donelson ELIOTTE (1903-1983). Upon Elizabeth's death aforesaid she bequeathed her entire estate including 5 plantations located along Apperson's Creek located within Mrs Eliottte's lot: Rocky Mount Plantation; White Sulphur Plantation; Catawba Plantation; Neuse River Plantation This last plantation came into being upon Mrs Eliottte's death due to legal wrangling between her heirs apparent - Ralston Elliott ELIOTTE (1910-1994) and Mary Anna Mae HENDERSON (1920-2002). On December 3rd 1954 Mrs Elliott gave up all rights thereto consisting then only of 12 acres (5 ha) adjoining Apperson's Creek within Mrs Henderson's lot making it finally available for development as described hereinabove The following year on November 15th 1955rocky mount plantation became available for purchase by Mr Kenneth KNOXberry By 1986 Sparta had a population over 11k whos mainly employed either service industry or blue collar work
Spartanburg is one of the oldest cities in South Carolina. It was founded in 1755 by Hughson, a whitesmith, and was named for General James Knox, who fought in the American Revolution. Spartanburg quickly grew as a commercial center and a key stop on the Underground Railroad. The city was renamed for General Robert E. Lee after he surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865.
