Spartanburg is the county seat of Spartanburg County and the only incorporated municipality in Spartanburg County. It lies along the Pee Dee River and its banks are lined with rolling vineyards and tobacco plantations dating back to the early 1800s. The local government was first organized on December 12, 1811 when twelve farmers from nearby Laurens voted to create a village within their own township. On October 1, 1816, two years after Laurens became part of Spartanburg County, a group of thirteen farmers from Mount Pleasant donated land east of town for a courthouse and jail. This location served as the county seat until 1838 when Charleston took over that role. On July 14, 1860, during Confederate military occupation of South Carolina following the American Civil War, General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered his troops to burn down all black churches in what came to be known as "The Day of Infamy". Eighteen black churches were destroyed in total; six blocks east of downtown Sparta sits one still standing today--the oldest extant African-American church in South Carolina. On February 20th 1916 Sparta's first female physician Dr Alma Witherspoon died while giving birth to her second child at home by Caesarean section at age 33 years old after being diagnosed with peritonitis due to an infection contracted while working as an obstetrician/gynecologist in New York City
