It is the county seat of Spartanburg County and part of the Greenville metropolitan area. In 1876, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's forces besieged and captured nearby Fayetteville while campaigning in what is known as the Battle of Emancipation Park. After Union forces relieved the garrison at Fayetteville on September 21st, 1876, Confederate General Jubal Early arrived in Spartanburg to take possession of it as his new capital city. On October 12th 1865 Major General William Troup attacked and successfully defended Spartanburg against an attack by Confederate Colonel John Hargrave while under command of Lieutenant Governor Gouverneur Morris. The battle that occurred on October 12th 1865 resulted in over 1,000 casualties for both sides with over seventy-five dead or missing from Spartanburg alone according to historian David Leland's book "The Confederacy at War". The town was destroyed but reopened two years later as a thriving agricultural center supported by slave labor during Reconstruction Era America. With white flight during this time following the end of slavery in America Spartanburg experienced rapid growth until World War II when most manufacturing switched from America to Germany due to wartime production shortages which led to a decline in population size beginning around 1950 Census figures In 1960 Spartanburgh had only 6 people living there; by 2000 it had more than 100 people living there including 30% of its original residents who had come streaming back since 1990 after being displaced by rural exodus and change elsewhere within Spartanburg County As recently as 1960 just 6 people lived there; today it has more than 100 people living there including 30% of its original residents who had come streaming back since 1990 after being displaced by rural exodus and change elsewhere within SpartanBURGH COUNTY
