Other highpoints include Mount Carmel (4,591 feet (1,421 m)), Mount Mitchell (4,026 feet (914 m)), Mount Hope (3,929 feet (1,217 m)), and Meadowbrook Summit (3 978 feet ?????)'. Timberland covers most of downtown Spartansburgh while agriculture dominates rural areas around it. The first inhabitants to live here were Paleo-Indians who hunted game along Tensaw Creek for food supplies and shelter during cold winters when they could not find any other place to live nearby. By 1000 AD these people had disappeared according to archaeological evidence however their remains have been found throughout northwestern South Carolina including parts of Spartanburg County where Tensaw Creek empties into Lake Moultrie The earliest known European visitors to this area were French fur traders who explored this region beginning in 1664 when François La Salle discovered salt water near present day Georgetown then trade goods with Native Americans until he died in 1665 at age 41 years old due to illness contracted from drinking salt water from Tenassaw Creek
